Green Fleets

Reducing global transportation sector emissions is a top priority, and the greening of public and private vehicle fleets is one way for entire populations to take steps towards reducing their carbon footprint and environmental impacts.

Fleet owners worldwide are under pressure to decarbonize their operations, and shifting to zero-emissions vehicles is a key element of this effort. Some fleet owners have already begun the journey toward a green fleet. In the United States, more than 200 transit agencies are already operating, ordering or have received funding for zero-emissions vehicles.

Many other fleet owners, cities, or states  have set targets for transportation decarbonization, and others are only now beginning to consider how to complete this transformation.

Operators face significant technical and market challenges, and owners may be challenged by the vision and coordination needed to successfully transition to green. Transportation decarbonization will require a fundamental rebalancing of the energy environment, development of new supply chains, and significant investment in hard infrastructure and workforce development. Careful planning will be needed to realize a green fleet future, whether for a big city transit agency or a small-town municipal fleet.

Don’t know where to start? You’re not alone.

Converting the entire existing fleet to zero-emissions is no easy undertaking. It requires an enormous amount of time and resources to carefully plan out a successful implementation. To address these challenges and advance your decarbonization goals, the Jacobs team starts by considering a few key issues:

Service Planning

Zero-emissions vehicles perform differently than fossil fueled vehicles and are further impacted by factors like cold temperatures. One of the first steps is determining how to meet service needs with a new fleet type.

Power

Whether you’re converting to battery- or hydrogen-powered vehicles, it is critical to know how much power you need and when you need it. We can inform you about your options to manage loads, costs, and operational risks.

Facilities

Chances are your facilities weren't designed with zero-emissions vehicles in mind. Do you have space for new infrastructure? Are there other limitations? Should you renovate or replace your facilities? You'll need to understand the key decision points and investment requirements of your current facilities.

Vehicles

Zero-emissions vehicle technology is evolving rapidly, and you have an operation to run. You need to know what product offerings exist and how reliable they are. How quickly should you be moving to replace your fleet? How can you set up a pilot program to most effectively educate your organization on these new vehicles?

Sustainability & Equity

Converting to zero-emissions generates a suite of community benefits that should be quantified and articulated to help develop a more complete understanding of the program impacts. Workforce development and local contracting opportunities can drive investment in communities, while pollutant and noise reduction improve local quality of life.

Cost & Schedule

Transitioning to zero-emissions infrastructure is not cheap and doesn't happen overnight. Understanding the money and time needed to make this revolutionary change is critical to obtaining resources and reporting on progress.

Guiding your fleet conversion from idea to launch.

Setting emission reduction targets is one thing, meeting them (while continuing to provide your core service) is another – and the road to a net zero-carbon future will be different for every operator. A deliberate and comprehensive planning process will help fleet owners avoid disruptions to service, lost revenue, and wasted resources while undergoing this fundamental change to operations. No matter where you are on your decarbonization journey, we partner with you from start to finish – and beyond – to create smart, tangible solutions that help realize your net zero commitments and transform the world for good.

Not only do we deliver world-class technical solutions, our work is underpinned by strategic, forward-looking advisory on developing trends that will shape the future of energy – from changing consumer behaviors and a rapidly evolving policy environment to the ever-increasing pace of change in the emerging digital and technology landscape.

Our proven and comprehensive approach will help you take action to adapt to the new transportation economy.
